CityKidz Sells Playhouse Theatre: Moving Towards Bigger Dreams

Our BIG dream is that one day, in the not so distant future, we will see the end of child poverty in Canada and every child will have equal opportunity to thrive, to dream big and to reach their full potential. Today, we’re getting a little closer to achieving that BIG dream!

The Playhouse Theatre at 177 Sherman Avenue North, built in 1914, has been the home to CityKidz since 1998 when it was purchased from the City of Hamilton. Back in 1998, CityKidz was 5 years old and had a few hundred kids attending on Saturdays. 18 years later, thousands of children experience our life changing programs over multiple program sessions each week. The Playhouse Theatre served us well all these years and many BIG dreams were instilled and nurtured there. But today, CityKidz’ dreams are even bigger. We’re excited to announce that the Playhouse Theatre has been sold with an expected closing date of November 30th, and soon we will be packing up our many fond memories and moving towards an exciting new future!

What’s next?

A recent partnership with the Hamilton Port Authority has created a wonderful new home for CityKidz at 601 Burlington Street East. While the offices and some programming have been operating from this location for the past 4 years, it’s time to consolidate all of the programs under one roof to better serve the kids in our community. This will provide more space, better use of our staff and volunteer resources and safer, more efficient bus drop-offs, enabling us to create a better, more sustainable CityKidz.

“Hamilton Port Authority is delighted to be offering a new home for CityKidz programs. The new subsidized lease has an in-kind value of $1.5 million over 15 years, and extends the Port’s long history of investment in our community. We’re thrilled to build on our partnership with CityKidz and to support this organization’s excellent work,” said Ian Hamilton, Vice President, Business Development & Real Estate, Hamilton Port Authority.

We’re so excited for the great things to come and thankful to the Hamilton Port Authority for helping us make this BIG dream a reality. Renovations to build a brand new theatre at 601 Burlington will begin in November. The renovations will be completed this winter and the new theatre ready to open in March, for our spring season.

Further details will be revealed at CityKidz annual Big Dream Banquet on November 10th at the Hamilton Convention Centre.
