More children and youth than ever are looking for a place like CityKidz, a place of safety, belonging, and hope.
Maya has been coming to CityKidz for years. She never misses a program day. Like many of the youth we serve, she is being raised by a single parent and carries responsibilities far beyond her age. When school ends, her neighbourhood offers very few safe or consistent options for teens.
On Wednesday evening, Maya gets on the CityKidz bus knowing exactly where she is headed. When she walks through the doors, she is greeted by name. Adults ask how her week was. There is food waiting, laughter in the room, and a sense that she belongs.
Today, Maya is a Junior Leader. She still attends CityYouth on Wednesday evening, and now she also spends her Saturdays volunteering at CityKidz, standing at the door to welcome younger children, remembering their names, and helping them feel safe, just like she once was. The same program that once supported her is now shaping her into a leader for others.
Maya’s story is powerful, but it is not unique.
Last fall, the need for CityKidz programs grew significantly. On Wednesday nights, more than 100 youth regularly attended CityYouth. On Saturdays, we welcomed an average of over 350 children. We are seeing increased demand from our most at-risk neighbourhoods, and our waiting list continues to grow.
